Locws Schools 2015: Oystermouth Primary: Workshops

Workshop days with David Marchant

It is always very exciting to see children’s ideas evolve when inspired by the Art Across the City exhibits. We had a variety of processes and experimentation on the go with the groups really thinking differently about their work. The children were inspired by all aspects of the tour and created 2 and 3 dimensional artworks accordingly.

Some groups experimented with structures making sculptural pieces and others were inspired purely by the visual, which could be set in their school grounds.
By adapting Michael Stumpf’s work, one group made a mermaid with an oyster on its head. Thus creating a work which was more site-specific to Oystermouth. Others made a memory tree and a memory Slip bridge sculpture inspired by Colin Priest’s work. There was a cityscape amphitheatre made from card. A great poster was made, inspired by Jeremy Deller’s work and a cyber style robot sculpture that evolved from an array of work we saw on the tour. There were also surfboards, seagulls, ice cream and boats all inspired by the surrounding area.
