After discussing and thinking of some great ideas on our tour it was all systems go when we arrived back at the school. We had previously spoken about making Elephants with a twist based on Tom Goddards work and were going to mix it up with other Locws influences.
I carried out a few demonstrations and everyone was eager to start.
We worked in clay and made a larger scale paper-mache, card and chicken wire elephant.
The teacher had already focused on using text from Dylan Thomas writings and we used this to cover the face and ears of the elephant. This also being a response to Jeremy Deller’s “More Poetry is Needed” Jon Burgerman’s “portrait of the Artist as a young Doodle’ and Rhian Edwards “Mega Poem” .
Our smaller scale sculptures from clay were largely based on characters from Jon Burgerman’s work and the story of Lizzy the Elephant was highlighted through the inspiration of Tom Goddard’s artwork.
The group were calm and collective and worked very well over the two sessions. Sophie said “I’ve never made something like this before” about our sculpture and Emily said that she particularly enjoyed making up poems and sticking them onto the ears.
Victoria really enjoyed working with clay and Atlanta liked painting her clay sculpture when it was dry.
Sophie commented on the whole event saying, “that was brilliant”.
