Locws Schools 2013: Oystermouth Primary School

The children instantly engaged with Pete Fowler’s work Portrait of the Artist as a Young Octopus, expressing their interest in the bright colours and its sense of symmetry. They asked lots of questions regarding the concept behind this mural and liked the unusual portrayal of Dylan Thomas as a genie, the ships with buildings for sails and its general stylisation. Back at school they drew inspiration from this and it also generated several ideas, which involved using a variety of iconic items from the area such as the ‘Mumbles Train towing Langland beach huts’ and ‘ships with ice cream for sails’.

There was a lot of uplifting enthusiasm as we toured the work. Ike particularly liked the paradise tropical feel from Sinta Tantra’s work, whilst Freya commented on the contrast of the background. These observations clearly stood out, as inspiration for the final design of the Mural at school. Henry said some interesting things about Bristow Lloyd’s work Coming Soon, “It looks like an American chocolate wrapper”. Lewis spoke about Olaf Breuning’s work commenting on its situation in the main shopping area where everyone uses mobile phones. May said, “I like the way this is drawn as every one was communicating”.

The Mural at school was created with enthusiasm throughout this project. Year 6 were very proud of their results and the fact that they were leaving such a great statement at the Front of their school for everyone to see. Ella commented on the finished pieces saying, “it looks amazing and makes the school look more attractive and modern”. Bethan said, “This is the best piece of art that Oystermouth has ever done. If we are capable of this we are capable of anything”.
