This large-scale text work takes a quote from a ritualistic scene acted out by protesters during the ‘Rebecca Riots’ of 1839-1844, where farmers in southwest Wales protested against new road tolls imposed by the 1835 Highway Act. Disguised in women’s clothing farmers destroyed the tollgates and became known as ‘Rebecca’s Daughters’ or the ‘Rebeccas’.
Through a change in context and representation, Simon & Tom Bloor give the quote new meaning and vigour, making it stand somewhere between a slogan and an inspirational call to action. With global political uncertainty the rejuvenation of this prophetic statement is delivered as an astute comment on our times.

Mae’r gwaith testun mawr hwn yn cymryd dyfyniad o olygfa ddefodol gan brotestwyr yn ystod ‘Terfysgoedd Becca’ 1839-1844, pan oedd ffermwyr yn ne-orllewin Cymru’n protestio yn erbyn tollau heol newydd Deddf Priffyrdd 1835. Mewn gwisg menywod, dinistriodd ffermwyr y tollglwydi a dod i gael eu hadnabod fel ‘Merched Becca’.
Trwy newid mewn cyd-destun a chynrychiolaeth, rhoddodd Simon a Tom Bloor ystyr a grym newydd i’r dyfyniad, gan ei wneud yn rhywbeth rhwng slogan a galwad ysbrydoledig i weithredu. Gydag ansicrwydd gwleidyddol byd-eang, mae adfywio’r datganiad proffwydol hwn yn cyflwyno sylw craff ar ein hamserau.
