Locws Schools 2010 : Cefn Hengoed Comprehensive School

Artworks inspired by Locws Projects 2010/2

Some of the teenagers, on arrival seemed to be difficult to enthuse, however as the project progressed there engagement within the work became a lot more positive and this was reflected within the final work produced.

There was a film made with separate audio called ‘The Ghosts of the Gym’ which was then projected onto a students back.
An installation of balloons was made over a stairwell in the school and this was inspired by the artwork of Tine Beck. Another balloon installation was made with messages tied onto and stuck to the classroom ceiling. This represented floating memories. Also filling balloons with ink and bursting them made some great experimental painting, and some interesting drawings were made using overlays and scratching back surfaces.

A full size model of a chair was made inspired by the eisteddfod chair on show in the Dylan Thomas Centre. For me, this class really showed how an unusual approach to the project worked and was able to engage with pretty much anyone.
It had great potential and it was great to see how engaged students could become in contemporary art.
