Locws Projects 2010 – New Art Project for Civic Centre, Swansea

For Spring 2010, Locws International has commissioned a temporary new artwork for Swansea’s Civic Centre by Wales-based artist Jackie Chettur.

‘…it is 89 days this morning since we left Mumbles head’ by Jackie Chettur.

Inspired by the maritime history of Swansea, Jackie Chettur has researched elements of the journeys of Swansea’s ‘Cape Horners’ to create a visual installation on the seaward side of the Civic Centre.

Using a diary by Benjamin Davies, an industrial worker sent off to Chile on one of Swansea’s copper barques, Jackie Chettur has brought to life his epic voyage and delved into the history of the Swansea Cape Horners who brought copper ore back from Chile in the late 1800’s.
The new artwork consists of a series of staged images created by the artist using historical artefacts, models and paintings that depict the long journeys and extraordinary sights that the sailors experienced as they set sail from Swansea Bay, past Mumbles Head and out beyond the horizon.
Created using 3D image technology the images are displayed within 6 stereo viewers set out on the seaward side of Swansea’ Civic Centre with the view of Mumbles head in the distance.
Dates: 30th April – 23rd May, 10 – 5pm daily.
Location: Swansea’s Civic Centre

Ar gyfer gwanwyn 2010, mae Locws International wedi comisiynu gwaith celf newydd dros dro ar gyfer Canolfan Ddinesig Abertawe gan yr artist Cymreig, Jackie Chettur.

‘… y bore ‘ma mae’n 89 diwrnod ers i ni adael pen y Mwmbwls’ gan Jackie Chettur.

Wedi’i ysbrydoli gan hanes morol Abertawe, mae Jackie Chettur wedi ymchwilio i elfennau teithiau ‘morwyr yr Horn’ Abertawe i greu gosodiad gweledol ar ochr y môr y Ganolfan Ddinesig.

Drwy ddefnyddio dyddiadur Benjamin Davies, gweithiwr diwydiannol a anfonwyd i Chile ar un o longau copr Abertawe, mae Jackie Chettur wedi rhoi bywyd i’w fordaith arwrol ac wedi ymchwilio i hanes morwyr yr Horn Abertawe a ddaeth â mwyn copr yn ôl o Chile tua diwedd y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg.
Mae’r gwaith celf newydd yn cynnwys cyfres o ddelweddau wedi’u llwyfannu a grëwyd gan yr artist gan ddefnyddio arteffactau, modelau a phaentiadau hanesyddol, sy’n darlunio’r teithiau hir a’r golygfeydd anhygoel y profodd y morwyr wrth adael Bae Abertawe, heibio i Ben y Mwmbwls a thu hwnt i’r gorwel.
Drwy ddefnyddio technoleg delweddau 3D, arddangosir y delweddau o fewn 6 gweledydd stereo wedi’u gosod ar ochr y môr Canolfan Ddinesig Abertawe, gyda golygfa Pen y Mwmbwls yn y pellter.
Dyddiadau: 30 Ebrill – 23 Mai, 10am– 5pm bob dydd.
Lleoliad: Canolfan Ddinesig Abertawe
Mae Locws Rhyngwladol yn gweithio gydag artistiaid cyfoes rhyngwladol a Chymreig i greu gweithiau a phrosiectau celf weledol newydd sy’n ymateb i ddiwylliant a threftadaeth dinas Abertawe. Gyda chefnogaeth Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, Sefydliad Esmée Fairbairn, Dinas a Sir Abertawe, Amgueddfa Abertawe ac Oriel Gelf Glynn Vivian.
