Locws Projects 2009 – New Art Project for Brangwyn Hall, Swansea

Locws International presents a new commission by artist duo Robert Bermingham and Richard Robinson to coincide with the Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts: the ‘British Empire Panel Project’

Using the British Empire Panels as their inspiration, Bermingham and Robinson have transformed the entrance windows to the Brangwyn Hall into a giant kaleidoscope of light and colour, visible both inside and out, day and night, that evokes the energy and life of Sir Frank Brangwyn’s panels held within. This installation brings a new focus of attention upon the panels and by doing so reaffirms their national significance and importance.

Each of the three windows corresponds to one of the panels and by using the same colour palette as the originals, Bermingham and Robinson have created a bold design of coloured vinyl pasted directly onto the windows.
This new installation captures the essence of Brangwyn’s original concept and highlights the aspect that brought the British Empire Panels rejection from the House of Lords: his uncompromising vision of the colourful and optimistic nature of Empire. By sharing and working with Brangwyn’s ideals, Bermingham and Robinson have created a contemporary artwork using the very same strength of creative independence and determined artistic vision.
Artist, Richard Robinson said ‘The Brangwyn panels are a hidden treasure in Swansea and we hope that our artwork will encourage the public to see his work. Swansea is very privileged to have them and it has been inspiring to create a response to these magnificent panels.’
Robert Bermingham & Richard Robinson work collaboratively, forging a dynamic artistic partnership that has a growing reputation within the contemporary visual arts in Wales. Their work fuses drawing, collage, installation and sculpture in an exciting and innovative way, utilizing new ideas and techniques to create vibrant and dynamic artworks. They have exhibited across the U.K. and were shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2006
Dates: Open throughout the festival, 3 – 17 October, all day, everyday.
Location: Entrance windows to the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea.

Prosiectau Locws 2009 – Prosiect Celf Newydd i Neuadd Brangwyn, Abertawe
Cyflwyna Locws Rhyngwladol gomisiwn newydd gan yr artistiaid Robert Bermingham a Richard Robinson i gyd-fynd â G_yl Cerdd a Chelf Abertawe: ‘British Empire Panel Project’
Gan ddefnyddio Paneli’r Ymerodraeth Brydeinig fel eu hysbrydoliaeth, mae Bermingham a Robinson wedi trawsffurfio ffenestri mynediad Neuadd Brangwyn i galeidosgop o olau a lliw, yn weladwy o’r tu mewn a’r tu allan, ddydd a nos, sy’n adlewyrchu’r egni a’r bywyd ym mhaneli Syr Frank Brangwyn. Daw’r gosodiad hwn â chanolbwynt sylw newydd i’r paneli, a thrwy wneud hynny yn atgyfnerthu eu pwysigrwydd a’u harwyddocâd cenedlaethol.

Mae pob un o’r tair ffenest yn cyfateb i un o’r paneli, a thrwy ddefnyddio’r un palet lliwiau a’r gwreiddiol, mae Bermingham a Robinson wedi creu dyluniad trawiadol o finyl lliw wedi’i bastio’n uniongyrchol ar y ffenestri.
Mae’r gosodiad newydd hwn yn dal hanfod cysyniad gwreiddiol Brangwyn ac yn amlygu’r agwedd a arweiniodd at Dw’r Arglwyddi yn gwrthod Paneli’r Ymerodraeth Brydeinig: ei weledigaeth ddigyfaddawd o natur liwgar ac optimistaidd yr Ymerodraeth. Drwy rannu a gweithio gyda delfrydau Brangwyn, mae Bermingham a Robinson wedi creu gwaith celf cyfoes gan ddefnyddio’r un annibyniaeth greadigol gref a’r weledigaeth gelfydd benderfynol.
Dywedodd yr artist, Richard Robinson, ‘Mae paneli’r Brangwyn yn drysor cudd yn Abertawe, a gobeithiwn y bydd ein gwaith celf yn annog y cyhoedd i weld ei waith ef. Mae Abertawe’n freintiedig iawn i’w cael ac roedd yn ysbrydoliaeth i greu ymateb i’r paneli ardderchog hyn.
Mae Robert Bermingham a Richard Robinson yn cydweithio, gan ffurfio partneriaeth gelfydd ddeinamig ag enw da sy’n tyfu yn y celfyddydau gweledol cyfoes yng Nghymru. Mae’u gwaith yn cyfuno arlunio, collage, gosodiadau a cherfluniau mewn ffordd arloesol gyffrous, gan ddefnyddio syniadau a thechnegau newydd i greu gweithiau celf bywiog a deinamig.
Maent hefyd wedi arddangos ar draws y DU, ac roeddent ar restr fer Gwobr Arlunio Jerwood yn 2006.
Dyddiadau: Ar agor drwy gydol yr _yl, 3 – 17 Hydref, drwy’r dydd, bob dydd.
Lleoliad: Ffenestri mynediad Neuadd Brangwyn, Abertawe.
Mae Locws Rhyngwladol yn gweithio gydag artistiaid cyfoes rhyngwladol a Chymreig i greu gweithiau a phrosiectau celf weledol newydd sy’n ymateb i ddiwylliant a threftadaeth dinas Abertawe. Gyda chefnogaeth Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, Sefydliad Esmée Fairbairn a Dinas a Sir Abertawe.
