Bedwyr Williams was born in North Wales in 1974 and continues to work there.
Walk a mile in my shoes, 2006. Bedwyr Williams
Bedwyr Williams is a multi-disciplined artist; his work includes stand-up comedy, sculpture and painting, posters and photography. He draws on his own experiences and his take on the world is simultaneously satirical and deadly serious. He reveals both his and our own complex neurosis and idiosyncrasies. His installation, text based works and live performances explore subject matter ranging from growing up in Colwyn Bay with size 13 feet, to a mini bus crash with four other artists in residence (in which he is the only survivor). He makes work relevant to a sense of place and belonging but simultaneously refuses to be compromised or pigeonholed by provincial tastes or stereotypes.
Williams achieved his BA Hons in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London 1994-1997; and MA at Ateliers Arnhem, The Netherlands 1998-1999.
Nimrod, 2009. Bedwyr Williams
Williams has exhibited extensively and in 2005 he was the Artist In Residence for Wales at the Venice Biennale. He has also received a Creative Wales Award in 2005 and 2010. His recent exhibitions include Gallery, Galerie, Galleria – Norma Mangione Gallery, Turin, Italy; The Eccentric, The Idiosyncratic and The Unpredictable – Schirman & de Beaucé, Paris; Nimrod – Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool; Bedwyr Williams – Enjoy Public Art Gallery, Wellington, New Zealand; Methodist to my Madness – The Bakery, Annet Gelink, Amsterdam; Extraordinary Days – Oriel Davies Gallery, Newtown; Grin and Bear it, Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, Ireland.
