Walking Between Craters
City Centre and Kilvey Hill Walks
Simon Whitehead’s project marks 70 years since the beginning of the devastating bombing of Swansea during the Second World War and most notably the Three Nights Blitz of 1941. Using a series of aerial photographs of the city taken by the Luftwaffe the artist has navigated wartime Swansea and created two maps that invite the participant on walks through the city and on Kilvey hill. These walks act as a palimpsest, revealing how these spaces have been reabsorbed into Swansea’s present landscape and folklore, using a mobile phone at specific viewpoints, the walker may hear voices recalling another time and place.
