Clwyd Primary School Workshops
After the LOCWS tour, I was looking forward to working with this enthusiastic and fun class. The school was very welcoming and we were able to source a lot of materials for our project from the caretaker, therefore helping the environment by recycling! We had sourced an abundance of materials, which included, clear Perspex, metal frames, a basketball stand, lots of card and old wooden chair legs. Everybody was really excited to make art from these materials and had plenty of ideas on the day.
A group had already chosen clay as a medium and were using it to create an art piece based on David Blandy’s work, The Devil Meets Dylan Thomas. The group produced a stage set of the Devils lair complete with fire.
Fiona Curren’s St Mary’s based piece, An accident waiting for something to happen, provided a lot of inspiration for several groups. Cael’s group created a piece called ‘The tree of thought’ and used a large card tube as the trunk, which was adorned with thought leaves. Cael really enjoyed the construction element of this project and was very focussed when we began assembling the piece.
Fiona Curren also influenced a second group who created a self-portrait and used wooden painted strips of wood for the character’s hair. This self-portrait design was also based upon the Neon work of David Marchant’s. The Perspex sheet also provided us with material for an interpretation of the Neon portraits and using acrylic paint children painted their own self–portraits which were mounted and framed by the Perspex and metal recycled from the caretakers store.
‘Its really exciting making something from nothing’, said Page who did and excellent job of managing her project and was fully engaged throughout the two days. Everybody mad some very creative pieces of art.
