Titled &#8216;<strong>Portrait of the the Artist as a Young Octopus<\/strong>&#8216;, Fowler&#8217;s monumental work will have an instant impact.<\/p>\n<p>Opposite the train station, a former nightclub (The Venue) has been transformed to celebrate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dylanthomas.com\/\">Dylan Thomas<\/a> as part of Art Across The City, ahead of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dt100.info\/\">Dylan Thomas Centenary <\/a>in 2014. Playing with quirky references to his writing, the mural celebrates Dylan\u2019s work with affectionate nods to Swansea. Fowler\u2019s unique, inimitable style brings a vibrant dash of colour and history to the High Street.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.locwsinternational.com\/?attachment_id=6136\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6136\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6136\" alt=\"THE VENUE\" src=\"http:\/\/www.locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/THE-VENUE.jpg\" width=\"566\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/THE-VENUE.jpg 566w, https:\/\/locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/THE-VENUE-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 566px) 100vw, 566px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The giant 9 x 6m mural has Dylan as its centrepiece, complemented by Fowler\u2019s unique take on Swansea including it\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumwales.ac.uk\/en\/swansea\/\">maritime<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumwales.ac.uk\/en\/2804\/\">mining<\/a> heritage, <a href=\"http:\/\/kilvey.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/28\/swanseas-viking-origins\/\">Viking<\/a> history, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-14481770\">UFO sightings<\/a> alongside two giant horned horses and a pair of pink <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poemhunter.com\/best-poems\/dylan-thomas\/ballad-of-the-long-legged-bait\/\">octopus<\/a>. The work was developed alongside Locws International\u2019s Swansea Icons workshop programme, where local schools were involved in learning about Swansea and proposing new icons for the City, many of which are featured in Fowler\u2019s largest commission to date.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Pete Fowler\u2019s most recognisable images have been for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.superfurry.com\/\">Super Furry Animals<\/a>&#8216; albums, videos, merchandise. His <a href=\"http:\/\/monsterism.net\/\">Monsterism<\/a> creations have spanned toy figures, clothing, CDs, stationary and more, gaining a world-wide fan base.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.locwsinternational.com\/?attachment_id=5554\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5554\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5554\" alt=\"Pete Fowler\" src=\"http:\/\/www.locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/fowler2.jpg\" width=\"670\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/fowler2.jpg 670w, https:\/\/locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/fowler2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/fowler2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/locwsinternational.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/fowler2-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 670px) 100vw, 670px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Locws International\u2019s Project Manager, Gordon Dalton said \u2018Pete\u2019s work is extremely popular and instantly recognisable. It\u2019s a great introduction to Swansea for first time visitors, and a pick me up for commuters and residents of the City. The school workshops programme has been an inspiration for the children and the artists alike\u2019. Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swanseabid.co.uk\/\">Swansea BID<\/a>, said, &#8216;As the lead for The Art Across The High Street project it&#8217;s great to see this project come to life helping improve the trading environment in the area it&#8217;s in.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Fowler\u2019s latest work is part of the Art Across The High Street scheme, a partnership project to improve the appearance of Swansea City Centre by commissioning bold artworks for disused or run-down retail units. The project is funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/wales.gov.uk\/?lang=en\">Welsh Government<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swansea.gov.uk\/\">City &amp; County of Swansea<\/a> and Swansea BID and delivered in partnership with LOCWS International. Art Across The High Street is contributing to the regeneration of Swansea City Centre, making it a more desirable, attractive location.
