Pupils from YGG Pontybrenin year 5\/6 undertook a tour on 23\/05\/16 of the latest Locws International Art Across the City<\/strong> exhibit, RESISTANCE, the exciting commission by Rich White<\/strong><\/a> as part of the LOCWS Schools<\/strong><\/a> project during the Summer term 2016. <\/p>\n

The year 5\/6 class arrived at the museum to see Rich White\u2019s art work \u2018Resistance\u2019 and were asked, \u2018What does it remind you of ?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this the outside of a house and this the inside\u201d,<\/em> said Chelsea as she explored the very different sides of the sculpture.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt reminds me of World war 11\u201d,<\/em> said Holly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, like a blown up house<\/em>\u201d, exclaimed Maisha.<\/p>\n

Oliver was intrigued and said, \u201cIt\u2019s like somebody is moving house and don\u2019t have room to store everything\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201c Never judge a book by its cover \u201d,<\/em> said Abbie.<\/p>\n

The pupils were intrigued by the greyness of the piece with Niamh saying, \u201c It\u2019s got no sentimental value\u201d.<\/p>\n

The children all had different opinions of the piece and it will be interesting to see what ideas the class come up with for their art piece back at school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe artist is trying to say that anything can be art\u201d,<\/em> said Josh<\/p>\n

Children from YGG Pontybrenin Primary then attended a two day workshop with our ‘Artist in Residence’ Dave Marchant. The workshop saw the children create an incredible interpretive sculptural piece.<\/p>\n

Feedback from YGG Pontybrenin:<\/strong> ‘Following our visit to the National Waterfront Museum<\/strong>, where we were inspired by Rich White\u2019<\/strong>s work, as a class we decided to re-vamp an item of furniture for the classroom.’<\/p>\n

‘The theme inspired by a passage way through time encouraged the children to look at the past and present. They decided to use an old book shelf from the classroom and make a collage on it. They chose different topics for each section of the shelves. On the fascia the children decided to represent the passage of time through doorways. Wooden cut-outs were made of doorways and clocks and added to the unit, giving it a different dimension.’<\/p>\n

‘Doing work with Dave was so much fun and we learnt so much about how the past and present can be represented. I loved doing the fashion because I love looking at what some people like and what used to be fashionable years ago.’<\/p>\n

‘I had so much fun working on the school section because I love seeing what other schools look like around the world today and what they looked like in the past. Dave helped us loads and I can\u2019t wait to do art in Gwyr. I think I want to be an artist after spending time with Dave.’ – Niamh<\/p>\n

‘Thank you Dave, it\u2019s been soooo much fun! I\u2019ve loved working with you and I hope I\u2019ll get to work with you again.’ – Tammy<\/p>\n
