National Waterfront Museum
Swedish artist Helen Edling’s two new installations respond to artworks by the Polish artist Josef Herman, whose work was inspired by the mining community of Ystradgynlais where he lived between 1944 and 1955.
Using the museum in unexpected ways, Helen Edling presents the viewer with a series of playful theatrical scenarios, ranging from small scenes of family life and
work to a mischievous flock of miners’ canaries who are in the process of ‘stealing’ Herman’s painting ‘Miners Singing’. Edling references Herman’s romantic ideas of the heroism of labour but gives the archetypes he portrays of ‘miner’ and ‘pregnant woman’ a new way of being experienced and considered.
This project is part of ArtShare Wales, Amgueddfa Cymru’s visual arts partnership scheme, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

Mae dau gosodiad newydd Helen Edling yn ymateb i weithiau celf gan yr artist Pwylaidd Josef Herman, a gafodd ei ysbrydoli gan y gymuned lofaol yn Ystradgynlais lle buodd e’n byw rhwng 1944 a 1955.
Gan ddefnyddio’r amgueddfa mewn ffyrdd annisgwyl, mae Helen Edling yn cyflwyno’r gwyliwr gyda chyfres o sefyllfaoedd theatrig a chwareus, sy’n amrywio o olygfeydd bychain o fywyd a gwaith teuluol, i ddiadell direidus o ganeris glowyr sydd yn y broses o ddwyn paentiad Herman, ‘Miners Singing’. Mae gwaith Edling yn cyfeirio at syniadau rhamantaidd Herman o arwriaeth lafur, ond yn cynnig ffordd newydd o weld ac ystyried y cynddelwau y mae’n portreadu o ‘löwr’ a ‘merch feichiog’.
