LOCWS INTERNATIONAL: PRESS RELEASE 01.10.08

Swansea Art Projects launched this Sunday with a Canine Choir Concert

Final preparations are underway for the launch of the first ever dog choir! The hounds are preparing for their first official concert, set for 12noon on Sunday 5 October at the National Waterfront Museum. The concert marks the launch of Locws Projects ’08 - a series of temporary art commissions from Locws International.

Richard Higlett’s ‘A Song for Jack’ has seen over thirty dogs and their owners audition for a place in the ‘canine choir’. The successful dogs have gone onto make recordings in Swansea Metropolitan University’s recording studios and on Sunday 5th October at 12noon the dogs will give a concert at the National Waterfront Museum to the public. On display inside the museum also will be an exhibition documenting the project. All are welcome to attend the concert held in the garden, and to join in also viewing Jennie Savage’s project outside Central Library at the Civic Centre.

'Your Eyes are a Window (A Soundtrack for the Horizon)' by Jennie Savage is a project made in response to Swansea Bay, which seeks to explore the mirror we are faced with when looking out to sea. The artist is interested in the concept of the sea as a metaphorical reflection of our inner consciousness. Jennie Savage has designed and built a temporary cinema space that looks out over the bay. Viewers are invited to sit and take time to contemplate the mysteries of the sea. This contemplation is focused by a soundtrack to the view, which has been made on the beaches of Swansea and Gower. Many Swansea residents have taken time out to help to make this piece and given the artist and the viewer an insight into their relationship to the sea.

Project Manager Grace Davies said: “Both projects have involved a huge number of people from Swansea and the surrounding areas, and the participants have had a great time getting involved. We are really looking forward to seeing the finished results on display.”

Locws Projects ’08 are run to coincide with Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
