LOCWS INTERNATIONAL: PRESS RELEASE 09.09.08

Dog Choir hits the studio!

Having recorded legends such as Richard Burton and Dylan Thomas, yesterday afternoon the Alexandra Road Studios in Swansea hosted performers of a slightly unusual pedigree. Artist Richard Higlett’s ‘Canine Choir’ set about creating ‘A Song for Jack’, a piece of music dedicated to Swansea Jack, a black retriever who gained heroic status by rescuing people from drowning in Swansea’s docks in the 1930’s.

The session captured the howls of eight dogs that make up the choir and included a rehearsal of the track that is to become ‘A Song for Jack’. The dogs, which ranged from a duo of Shitzus to a Border collie, all showed off their vocal ranges, with unexpected results.

“I wasn’t sure how the dogs would respond to being inside a proper recording studio but they exceeded my expectations. There were some surprisingly harmonious melodies particularly from Edward the Bassett Hound and Eva the Alsatian. The choir worked very well together” said artist Richard Higlett
Richard was commissioned by Swansea arts charity Locws International to come up with a special project to coincide with the Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts.

The dog choir will perform the piece at a special concert to be held on the museum green on October 5 at 12noon. The event is free and all are welcome to attend. An exhibition piece will be displayed in the National Waterfront Museum from 4-18 October, which documents the whole project.
