LOCWS INTERNATIONAL: PRESS RELEASE 20.08.08

Locws Projects ’08, Swansea

Locws International presents new commissions by Artists Richard Higlett and Jennie Savage to coincide with the Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts.

A Song for Jack by Richard Higlett
Taking his inspiration from the story of Swansea Jack, a black retriever who became a local hero in the 1930’s for rescuing drowning swimmers from Swansea’s docks, Richard Higlett will create ‘A Song for Jack’. The artist has led a campaign to attract singing dogs, and auditioned and recorded his ‘canine choir’. ‘A Song For Jack’ will then be transcribed into a published piece of music.

The ‘canine choir’ will perform a special concert outside the National Waterfront Museum with accompaniment from local musicians. The whole project will be recorded and an exhibition display will be available to see at the National Waterfront Museum from 4 – 18 October 2008.

Dates: The concert will be held on Sunday 5 October at 12noon.
Exhibition display open throughout the festival, 4 - 18 October, daily 10am - 5pm
Location: National Waterfront Museum, Swansea.

Your Eyes Are A Window (A Soundtrack For The Horizon) by Jennie Savage
Your Eyes are a Window (A Soundtrack for the Horizon) is a project made in response to Swansea Bay, which seeks to explore the mirror we are faced with when looking out to sea. The artist is interested in the concept of the sea as a metaphorical reflection of our inner consciousness.

Jennie Savage has designed and built a temporary cinema space that looks out over the bay. Viewers are invited to sit and take time to contemplate the mysteries of the sea. This contemplation is focused by a soundtrack to the view, which has been made on the beaches of Swansea and Gower. Many Swansea residents have taken time out to help to make this piece and given the artist and the viewer an insight into their relationship to the sea.

Dates: Open throughout the festival, 4 - 18 October, daily 10am - 5pm
Location: Outside Central Library at Swansea Civic Centre.
